Air travel

Portsmouth is about an hour drive from either Manchester, NH or Boston Logan Airport.  Manchester is significantly easier to navigate than Boston.  However, flights are primarily on Southwest and flight volume is limited, so book early.  Boston offers a greater volume of flights  and selection of airlines.  Beware of confusing directions and steep rental car taxes.

Car travel

Allow LOTS of extra time for traffic, as you will be competing with peak-weekend beachgoers.

Directions from 95 North or South

Take exit 5 on Interstate 95 North or South to the Portsmouth Traffic Circle. From the Circle take Route 1 By-Pass South to Beaches/Hampton. After 1 mile the road connects with Route 1 South. Follow Route 1 South for approximately 1 mile. At the third traffic light traffic light, take a left onto Elwyn Road. Pass the Urban Forestry Center (on your left), go approximately 1.3 miles to the stop sign at Foyes Corner. Go straight at the stop sign onto Route 1A South. Continue for 1.8 miles, over the wooden bridge, past the Odiorne Point State Park boat launch parking area (on left), to the main entrance of Odiorne Point State Park (on left).

Accommodations

We reserved rooms at two local hotels, the Comfort Inn and the Hampton Inn.  The room blocks have now expired, but you can contact the hotel to see if other rooms are available.  There may be discounts through AAA or AARP.

The Comfort Inn is the closer of the two, just off Rt 1.  The room rate includes breakfast, and the hotel has a small pool in the basement.

The Hampton Inn has a sunny medium-sized pool, and the rate includes breakfast and a nightly manager’s reception.  Ask for a king room with a whirlpool tub.  I seem to recall the king rooms had nicer TVs also.

Another hotel in this area is the Port Inn.  If you mention the Eppig-Woodfin wedding, you can receive 10% off.  The rooms at this hotel tend to be small, so it is probably worth looking into one of the larger rooms.

There are other hotels in the area that may be worth exploring.   The Hilton Garden Inn and the Sheraton are conveniently located in the heart of downtown Portsmouth, within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants.  There are also other lodgings available further away that may be less expensive.
